Where Alpha-Arbutin and Kojic Acid work by inhibiting the tyrosinase enzyme involved in melanin synthesis, Tranexamic Acid works upstream: it reduces the signal that tells melanocytes to produce melanin in the first place. This is a different point of intervention, and using both approaches together is more comprehensive than either alone.

It is well-tolerated across skin types, including sensitive skin, and carries no photosensitivity restriction.

N-Acetyl Glucosamine: A Third Independent Pathway

N-Acetyl Glucosamine (NAG) is an amino sugar with a brightening mechanism that is entirely distinct from both Tranexamic Acid and Vitamin C. It inhibits the glycosylation of tyrosinase, the post-translational modification process that activates the enzyme after it is synthesised. By inhibiting glycosylation, NAG prevents tyrosinase from becoming active regardless of how much signalling has stimulated its production. This is a third lock on the same melanin production system.

NAG also contributes to skin hydration as a precursor to hyaluronic acid, making its presence genuinely multifunctional in a way that distinguishes it from single-mechanism actives. Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C): Antioxidant Defence and Direct Brightening

The first is antioxidant: Ascorbic Acid is a direct antioxidant against the reactive oxygen species generated by UV exposure and environmental stress. The second is direct brightening: Ascorbic Acid has its own tyrosinase-inhibiting effect through a mechanism that is distinct from both Tranexamic Acid and NAG, and it supports collagen synthesis, which contributes to the overall skin quality improvement that makes a more even complexion visible.

Ascorbic Acid is notoriously unstable above pH 5.5, where it oxidises rapidly and loses efficacy. The correct formulation window, pH 4.5 to 5.0, keeps it stable and effective without dropping so low that tolerability is compromised. Holding that pH stable throughout shelf life is a citrate buffer’s responsibility in a well-made formula.

Glutathione: The Antioxidant Reserve
