Where we send marketing communications or use non-essential cookies, we do so on the basis of your consent. You may withdraw your consent at any time by contacting us or using the unsubscribe link in our emails.
5.3 Legitimate interests
We may process certain information where we have a legitimate business interest in doing so, such as fraud prevention, improving our services, and maintaining the security of our systems. 8. Cookies and Tracking Technologies
Our website uses cookies and similar technologies to run the shop, to understand how the site is used, and to measure our advertising.
8.1 What cookies we use
Essential cookies. These are necessary for the website to work and cannot be switched off. They include the cookies that let you add items to your cart, stay signed in, and complete a purchase.
Analytics cookies. These help us understand how visitors move through the site so we can improve it. We use Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager for this.
Advertising cookies. These let us measure whether our advertising is working and show relevant advertising to people who have visited our website. We use the Meta pixel, which covers Facebook and Instagram, and Google Ads.
These cookies are placed when you arrive on the site. For analytics and advertising we rely on legitimate interest under section 11 of POPIA rather than consent, and we tell you about them here and in the notice shown when you first visit. We do not use them to collect information about your health, your finances, or anything else POPIA treats as special personal information.
8.2 Managing cookies
You can control and delete cookies through your browser settings, and every major browser will let you block them entirely. Please note that blocking essential cookies will stop parts of the shop working.
You can also switch off personalised advertising at the source, which applies everywhere and not only on our website. Meta’s controls sit in your Facebook or Instagram account settings under Ads. Google’s are at adssettings.google.com.
If you would prefer that we did not process your information for analytics or advertising at all, you may object at any time using the contact details in section 14, and we will act on it.
9. How We Protect Your Information
We take the security of your personal information seriously and have implemented appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect it against unauthorised access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction. These include:
- SSL encryption for all data transmitted through our website
- Restricted access to personal information within our team
- Secure storage with our service providers
- Regular review of our security practices
While we take all reasonable steps to protect your information, no method of transmission or storage is completely secure. If you believe your information has been compromised, please contact us immediately at shop@rareritual.co.za.
10. Your Rights as a Data Subject
Under POPIA, you have the following rights in relation to your personal information:

10.3 Right to deletion
You have the right to request that we delete your personal information in certain circumstances, for example where it is no longer necessary for the purpose for which it was collected, or where you withdraw your consent and there is no other lawful basis for processing.
10.4 Right to object
You have the right to object to the processing of your personal information where we rely on legitimate interests as our legal ground. You also have the right to object to receiving direct marketing communications at any time.
10.5 Right to lodge a complaint
If you are not satisfied with how we handle your personal information, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator of South Africa (see Section 12).

11. Cross-Border Transfers of Personal Information
Where we transfer your personal information to service providers or partners based outside South Africa, we ensure that adequate safeguards are in place as required by POPIA. This includes ensuring that the recipient country has adequate data protection laws, or implementing contractual protections equivalent to those under POPIA.
